I get the biggest thrill watching my students (horses and people alike) starting to accomplish tasks together that they thought was too difficult. It has been things as simple as seeing someone that was once a very nervous and scared rider gain new levels of confidence simply by trotting their partner around the arena. Seeing a student pick up their horse’s shoulder and move it where they needed it to go. Watching someone learn about their horse’s leads and how to get a proper lead departure. But the biggest thrill I get is from watching the bond between horse and human grow stronger as the communication between them becomes clearer. That is where the partnership begins!
Here at Gates Practical Horsemanship, we offer a very practical approach to the issues of training. We will come to your facility and evaluate what your goals are for your equine partner, conduct a hands on evaluation of your horse, and discuss a training program that will assist you and your horse in becoming partners.
Some of our programs include:
Colt Starting: Every horse, no matter what his intended use is to be, needs a good solid foundation to begin his partnership with his human companion. By utilizing the Lyons method of training (developed by John and Josh Lyons) we are able to start your young horse out with a very solid foundation that he can fall back on and his human can use to continue his education for the rest of his life.
Trailer Loading: Have you ever been somewhere and watched someone’s horse step quietly and politely into the horse trailer and thought, “Man I wish my horse would do that”. If your horse does not load quietly into the trailer, have you ever wondered why? A lot of the time it is simply a matter that the horse was never taught to load. Getting your horse onto the trailer, and teaching him to load, are two different things. We can help overcome the issues of teaching your horse to load and unload while teaching him that the trailer is not a bad place after all.
Problem solving: Has your equine partner been out in the pasture all winter and needs a “tune up”. Is there something new that you want your equine partner to learn but are not sure how to teach him? Or has your equine partner started to develop some serious or possibly even dangerous
problems. We can help get you and your horse back on the right track to
a good partnership.
The Partnership Program: Would you like to be the one training your horse? Then our partnership program is for you!! We provide the opportunity to learn while training your own horse! With the help of John/Josh Lyons Certified Trainer Bert Gates, you can learn how to more effectively communicate with your equine partner.
